1 page, 1 slide

January 17, 2012

can you describe your company in 1 slide?

that is really hard.

usually takes quite a bit of time to understand your customers well enough to articulate your value in 1 slide and for the customers to agree.

but these days people have less patience and want to make decisions quickly.

would it be a pie chart of what you save them on costs?

would it be how you increase their revenues? or profits ?

perhaps how we improve their conversion ratios?

I always liked the signs posted on poles next to stoplights saying

“loose 10 kg in 10 weeks”

these guys can explain their business very quickly.  they have to – no angels, no VCs.

today i spent 2 hours with some guys, and i still do not understand their business. but they seem very close to something very interesting. hence the 2 hours.

back to the guys who want me to loose weight (and i should).

what is their cost per lead?

i bet the conversion ratio is not that high; and their best conversion ratios and channels are word of mouth. for all of us working on digital marketing machines, let not forget that. our customers can create the best leads for us. does your product/service make it easy for them to recommend you?

more often than not, the answer is “not”….

or

“paint your house for 1399NIS (3 rooms)”

the beauty with that one is that up-sell is coming. i bet’ya his ASP is > 1399NIS.

the photo here is one for a plumber. ( called ‘installer’ in hebrew – no downloads, no SEO)

“the fast plumber”

a bit too much text?

this plumber does not drive an old truck.

he drives a motorcycle. and this sign is on the box on the back of the motorcycle where he keeps most of his tools.

we all know it is no fun to seat at home and wait for the plumber. the fact that he is on a motorcycle, makes me believe his customers wait less. made me want to call him.

finally, lets see, on your website, most users or leads end up reading/using one page and then make a decision.

what is your most important page?

LinkedIn?

December 7, 2011

I pressed a button I did not intend
500 emails went out inviting older contacts I am not really in touch with to LinkIn.
Within 1 minute, 10 people accepted. the movement in the network. the signals coming back. I could visualize it.

Now I am learning about my new connections. Including my mom whom I have been avoiding as a facebook and LinkedIn contact for about 7 years. Hey, I love my mom. But I wanted to keep my facebook contacts to friends, not family, not a way to ‘watch my kids’ (Carmel is 20 today); my LinkedIn contacts to people I remember and am willing to help with a request and feel comfortable asking for help. While i am now connected to more people, I am concerned about the “noise” it can create

May 10, 2010

spent the weekend with Limor in NYC

now, my lover is gone and i am alone. again.

the shopping highlight of the weekend was anthropologie

irit my sister loves it; Anat, Danny’s wife wants it, and apparently, as i found out this weekend, Limor needs it.

as is common in such cases, i spent too much time (and money) in several of the brand’s stores

they are wonderful. clothing (for women), stuff for home, shoes, and more

some funny stories too. but more on that later.

anyhow, as a guy who spends hours in girls’ stores, trying to help in decision making, after a while, you are saturated.

was hoping they would provide free espresso for guys. nop.

but then, there is the savior. not emails, but books. available on premise.

this is where you get a chance to find out about stuff you probably would not otherwise.

here is one of my discoveries.

hope you enjoy it as much as i do

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.
It doesn’t interest me how old you are
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love
for your dreams
for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon…
I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow
if you have been opened by life’s betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed
from fear of further pain.
I want to know if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.
I want to know if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your
fingers and toes
without cautioning us to
be careful
be realistic
to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.
If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure
yours and mine
and still stand on the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
“Yes.”
It doesn’t interest me
to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after a night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.
It doesn’t interest me who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the center of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.
It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments

HOT vs YES

April 10, 2010

a big dilemma

we have hot triple play. no HD yet.

it is a good practice to call them once a year and re-negotiate the extra packages: sports, HBO, kids…

will try it next week and update if anything good happens

a big issue for me is movies. who offers the best ones?

seems to me YES is the big winner here. HOT movie channels are abysmal. few countries or regions in the world offer such a shitty package for such a high price as HOT. same on them and the regulator who is supposed to protect us. VOD is better, but they can really improve the selection. and the selection process. it still takes about 20 movies for several people sitting around the living room to decide on a movie. and then someone falls asleep.

Magic is a wonderful product. Magic.

if you read haaretz movie recommendations every friday regarding what to record in the following week, for many many weeks in a row, most of the recommendations where exclusive to Yes with some movies shared on both HOT and YES at similar times or slight difference (Friday vs Saturday). this happens too often and also raises a question as to why. i have a sneaky feeling there is some coloration, or perhaps anti-trust issues involved, but i may be really ignorant on this matter. what do you think?

anyhow, this friday’s haaretz summary has  much more HOT movies than YES’. this is great! keep it up, HOT. do not stay HOT, stay hot.

music on the go – Lifetrons micro speakers

April 6, 2010

unfortunately, i am a critical person. very hard to satisfy. i tell myself that there is a balance in that: once i am satisfied, it is a real satisfaction. nice little personal lie. but it works. try it.

so, when is see a great product:

  • good design,
  • quality performance,
  • reasonable price

i become happy and hopeful.

it also generates a sense of ownership in me.

happens to me with good clothing. it happens with cars (think Peugeot 205 GTI – the car that changed my life. red GTI.)

in a related but very different way, art does that to me. think Gerhard Richter’ The Cage Paintings‘ at the Tate Modern, or Monet water lilies at the orangerie.

Breath taking. you have to sit down and try to grasp

Now back to products, not art.

music on the go is important. da. iPod is an indication. so was the walkman.

but if you travel a lot, you also want great sound in your hotel room. or when you are with friend.

picked up the Lifetrons drumbass micro speaker

i recommend it:

  • well designed
  • extremely small and therefore mobile. check out the picture again to see the minute proportions
  • connects to iphone and laptops, thru the hand set connection. charges thru a USB port.
  • no other plugs, can almost carry in your pocket.
  • (have not checked on battery life yet, but i am counting on the easy recharge using USB)

and most importantly

  • great sound. surprisingly good.

airlines, indications of the future

March 25, 2010

want to see the future?

airlines are not just an indication of the past, but also of the future

On the way back from the USA had  a short connect in CDG. suitcase did not make it with me. but across the gate from my flight to TLV, there stood in its majesty, a dream. the A380. next to it were a boeing 747 and a 777.

WOW

the size of the thing. its tail is almost twice as high as the Jambo 747, a dream of the past.

every time i see a plane take off i think: what a marvel of engineering. 200 tonnes up in the air. and a victory of the human spirit. to think that we could build machines that would fly. man, i do not see me having had that vision 200 years ago.

Now, planes, flights and service are a thing of the past. a routine we do not think about. in the past 10 years i hae used an airplane much, much more than a bus

speaking of service, on which airlines do you get the best service?
American ones, not so much
European ones? Better
Asian ones? Great

Shows you in which direction the world is going

Throw in the towel

March 23, 2010

You know that little towel they give you when you fly business?
Usually after takeoff and sometimes before landing (on long flights)

How difficult is it for them to serve it hot, steamy hot?
So often I get it half wet, half dry
Half cold, half not warm

What is the point?
What are they trying to make me feel?
Does it build brand equity?
How hard is it to do it right? An extra 10 seconds and some caring?

I pity people who do not like their jobs, do not try to act professionally, do not respect their customers

look around and you will see them.

Oops.

rosewood – luxury hotels

March 18, 2010

had the priveldge to stay at rosewood sand-hill road

luxurious hotel. we got special rates

still, it is too much

over-service and under-value for the customer. i guess i am not their target customer:

  • you can not open a door yourself. they walk you to your room. the extra service means they try to park for you, they open and close the curtains in your room for you. too much
  • decor is fancy but does not have harmony. fake
  • a phone in the toilet. again, too much. at certain times i want to be with myself
  • another annoying service. every evening the come in. put on the radio, put on your bed a laundry bag and a request for you to comply with no change of sheets. i am ok with no change of sheets. i do not change them daily at home.  i would have preferred a chocolate bar on my bed instead.
  • another service that diminshes value. in the shower, i leave the temperature knob at a certain position, in this case around 9 o’clock, or 42 degrees celcius. as a service to me, the change the position to 12 o’clock. thanks. it who did that actually help?

some nice stuff however:

  • walk in closet
  • shampoo and soap are out of a nice dispenser. seems cleaner, feels more like home, and costs less. smart
  • location is fantastic
  • great restaurant
  • and great atmosphere with people laughing and interacting in public spaces till late at night. very unusual for california hotel. definitely not the sleeping warehouses i usually stay at.

under value:

  • parking, i do not do valet – just the wrong upbringing i guess cost $20 per night.
  • wifi? free? nop. how about $12.99 per day?
  • bowl of fruit for $5? $6.99? why not $15? all before tax

i really believe in buying in supermarkets. try it every trip. it is local, fun, and inexpensive

fancy restaurants once in a while to average the costs

atame – bind me

March 14, 2010

saw this beautiful collection of jewelry by barbara bui in a magazine advertisement on a plane from paris to detroit. the name atame, bind me , is the name of the new jewelry line

the snake here represents, i am told, rebirth, reproduction and wisedom.

i would add passion, bold, beauty, fear?

interesting jewlery collection. not sure too many girls i know would where it

anyhow, would love to know who is the photographer.

reminds me of richard avedon’s photograph of  natasia kinski and the snake for a 1981 vogue magazine shoot

and also

HOT V.O.D

February 28, 2010

i really love the idea of VOD

especially if there would be a much larger selection

when i worked in ECI, in 1991, my room-mate guy went down under to australia to try and sell a VOD system

it is now 20 years later

However, the VOD experience still sucks:

  • you wait too long.
  • the system gets jammed to often.
  • till you find and ‘download’ a movie it takes 20 minutes (just slightly less than the trip to blockbuster)
  • dear customer, please unplug the devise and wait. and wait, and wait. now, plug back

the real genius of hot VOD, (and comcast as i experienced it in NewHaven last year) is that the service providers have reached a perfect equilibrium of poor service, but just good enough. they have really mastered that one.

just a bit worse, and many would leave, i would like to think. or, maybe we are all just lazy suckers who want to be mastered by service providers who silently reach into our pocket every month.

what efficiency! i salute them and despise them at the same time. how dare they?!!

i am sure there is another equilibrium point in which we as customers are much more satisfied, cost are not higher, and prices are lower, too. with much more usage. go for “חבילת מתעקשים ומרווחים”.

perhaps it will happen faster if we disconnect and stream on-line.
